What is naringin? The Wonder behind this Strange-Sounding Substance
What is naringin?
The word sounds a little strange, right?
Let me first introduce to you a fruit named grapefruit. Grapefruit (Citrus paradisi) is a close relative of pomelo but is bigger and is pear in shape. This fruit has a thin skin which is yellow in color but may have a tinge of pinkish hue. The pulp's color may range from yellow to pinkish to reddish and have this acidic, sweet taste.
And in addition to those details, grapefruit is the source of this so-called naringin.
So that you may be familiar with this strange term, let me explain what naringin is. Naringin having a molecular weight of 580.53 and having a chemical formula of C27H32O14, is a citrus bioflavanoid (bioflavanoid is a group of compounds which comes from the rinds of citrus fruits and sometimes called as the vitamin P complex) which is said to improve one's blood vessels. It is in crystalline powder form, color ranges from white to light yellow and is responsible for the bitter flavor of grapefruit, a fruit closely related to pomelo.
As for its medicinal properties, it has the following properties: antioxidant, anti carcinogenic and a cholesterol lowering activity. As our bodies undergo the oxidation process, free radicals are produced which cause cell damage. But with naringin, the antioxidant present will help fight these free radicals thus decrease the rate of production of the cell damaging free radicals. Also, as this bioflavanoid is said to contain an anti carcinogenic property, this could also help us protect ourselves from the dangers of various cancers existing today. And this is also beneficial to those who suffers from having too much cholesterol in their body as this can lower the level of cholesterol by enhancing lipid metabolism and preventing LDL oxidation to take place.
From various studies conducted, there are other different health benefits which is said to be provided by the bioflavanoid naringin to us and this include: reduces the negative effect of alcohol intake, can be used for treating gastric lesions, protects plasma vitamin E levels and many more.
Now that this may be available in supplement form, you may buy it in drugstores and in the market. But before proceeding to the stores, may you be reminded … first, to consult your doctor and seek advice especially if you are taking medications as naringin has the ability to interact with medicines second, in choosing a product, choose products whose manufacturers are pharmaceutical GMP compliant. Among the dietary supplements sold in the market, there's a probability that in every five products, only one is of good quality where the nutrients contained is consistent to what is stated in the label. Sad yet a true story; this is because dietary supplements are not strictly regulated in oppose to prescription drugs.
Now that the question of “what is naringin” is answered, perhaps the next question now is “how could you maximize the benefits of grapefruit and its bioflavanoid like naringin?”
